A cocktail in a copper mug.

A Mexican Mule is a delicious twist on the classic Moscow mule. This refreshing ginger beer tequila cocktail is easy to make and perfect for celebrating Cino de Mayo, or any day.

The Moscow mule is a cocktail with ginger beer, lime, and vodka. This Moscow mule variation has the same ingredients, but replaces the vodka with tequila, of course! It's a similar recipe to my Prosecco Margarita Cocktail, but this time, ginger beer supplies the bubbles.

Why We Love This Cocktail

We all know that tequila and lime just go together! Adding bubbles just makes it all the more festive for a Cinco de Mayo toast or a hot afternoon by the pool. And spicy ginger beer adds a refreshing kick. You only need three ingredients to make this tequila ginger beer combo. (Four if you count the garnish) and you don't need a cocktail shaker.

Ingredients To Make This Drink

The ingredients to make this drink recipe laid out on a wooden board.
Ingredients to Make the Drink
  • Tequila This tequila mule recipe is using a Blanco, or white tequila. You can use any tequila variety, but I always try to buy only 100% pure blue agave. However, you don't have to buy the most expensive tequila for a mixed drink. Here's a handy guide to buying tequila: What Tequila Should You Buy
  • Ginger Beer Ginger Beer is not the same as ginger ale, and without the ginger beer, this drink is not a "mule". So don't try to use ginger ale, which is much sweeter, and doesn't have the ginger "kick", instead. I like to use a ginger beer that's a bit more spicy, and has a low amount of sugar. Look for one that's made from real ginger.
  • Lime Juice Only freshly squeezed limes will do. No bottled stuff!
  • Jalapeno slices This is completely optional, but I like to add them for garnish.

How To Make Mules

Mexican mule cocktails are very easy to make!

  • Fill a copper mug or highball glass with ice
  • Add tequila and lime juice
  • Top up with ginger beer
  • Stir and garnish with jalapeno slices and lime wedges

Tips

  • Don't skimp on ice. A Mexican mule needs to be icy cold, so fill your glass or mug right up with ice.
  • Your ginger beer should be well chilled.
  • Try a couple of ginger beer brands to find the one that you like best.
  • Use a jigger or small measuring cup to measure your tequila into each glass.

FAQs

Does Ginger Beer Contain Alcohol?

Ginger Beer does not contain alcohol, despite it's name. Originally it was an alcohol drink, but evolved into a soft drink.

Where do you Buy Ginger Beer?

You can find ginger beer in the soft drink isle of your grocery store.

Why are Mules Served in Copper Mugs?

According to one story, the original Moscow mule was sold in copper mugs as part of a marketing campaign. Also, it is thought that serving a mule beverage in a copper mug makes the drink seem colder, and because you hold a mug by it's handle, the drink doesn't come in contact with your warm hand.

What if I Don't Have Copper Mugs?

Not to worry! You can certainly enjoy this drink in a glass and it will taste just as good.

Is it Safe to Drink From Copper Mugs?

There is concern that drinking from copper mugs can cause copper toxicity. However, most copper mugs are lined with a food-safe material such as nickel or stainless steel. Check yours if you are using copper mugs to be sure.

Can you make a Moscow mule with ginger ale?

Ginger beer is a key ingredient in all of the mule drink variations, including this tequila mule. So if you use ginger ale instead, this would not be a Mexican mule. Ginger ale and tequila are a good combination as well, just not the same drink. This is a ginger beer cocktail.

Instructions

  • Pour in the tequila and lime juice
  • Top up the mug or glass with ginger beer

Notes

  • Don't skimp on ice. A Mexican mule needs to be icy cold, so fill your glass or mug right up with ice.
