Just to be clear, this easy pizza bowl recipe is not a copycat Olive Garden pizza bowl. While those certainly are yummy, they do have crusts in the form of a bread bowl.
What's to Love
- A low carb pizza bowl is a delicious way to satisfy a pizza craving without having to order in or make your own pizza dough.
- The whole family will have so much fun being able to customize their own delicious pizza bowl with their favorite toppings.
- Pizza in a bowl is a quick and easy dinner or lunch option.
- These bowls are gluten free and keto friendly.
- Just like these Pizza Stuffed Mushrooms, these easy pizza bowls are a great option when you feel like pizza night but don't want all the extra calories and carbs of regular pizza.
Ingredients
- Italian Sausage Meat You can also use actual sausage and remove the casings yourself. Use a gluten free Italian sausage to keep the pizza bowls if you are gluten-free or on a keto diet. We like spicy sausage, but you can use a mild version.
- Mushrooms Any mushrooms work, use whatever your favorites are.
- Pizza Sauce Or marinara sauce, or tomato sauce. Look for sauces with no added sugar for Keto friendly pizza bowls. I like this one.
- Salami As with the sausage meat, look for gluten free salami.
- Mozzarella Cheese You can use any cheese, but mozza is the pizza cheese!
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Brown the sausage and mushrooms
- Divide half of the pizza sauce between four bowls
- Top with the sausage and mushroom mixture
- Then half the cheese
- Top with the remaining pizza sauce
- Layer the pepperoni slices
- Top with the remaining cheese
- Bake
Variations
Just like traditional pizza, you can use your own favorite pizza toppings, and everyone can personalize their bowl. Swap or add:
- Try a Hawaiian pizza with cubes of ham and pineapple tidbits.
- Chopped green pepper
- Italian herbs, like fresh basil or oregano
- Bacon, prosciuttos, or pepperoni slices
- Pitted black olives
- Banana peppers or jalapenos
Tips
- Use oven safe bowls or ramekins for individual pizza bowls, or you can do the whole recipe in a casserole dish, which allows for serving larger portions.
- The sauce can bubble up so it helps to put the bowls on a rimmed baking sheet before going into the oven.
- You can use a microwave-safe bowl to cook this recipe in the microwave for approximately 5 minutes.
- Make ahead: these bowls are great for making ahead. Just assemble, cover with plastic wrap, and store in the fridge until you want to bake them.
- Remember that the actual bowls, as well as their contents, will be hot when they come out of the oven. Allow the bowls to cool a little and use caution when handling them.
