Prosecco Margarita Cocktail is the perfect way to toast Cinco de Mayo, which is next week. But, also, this sparkly margarita cocktail is a perfect drink for any time there that are cocktails to be had.

What is a Margarita?

There are several different, and interesting versions of the origins of the margarita cocktail.  But, regardless of how this yummy drink came to be, the ingredients of a classic margarita are the same. They are always: tequila, fresh lime juice, and an orange liqueur, such as Triple Sec, or Cointreau.

Two margaritas and a bottle of Prosecco

Shaken vs Blended Margarita

Whether you prefer a frozen, blended margarita, or an on the rocks version, or even a shaken one, is a personal preference. We like them on the rocks for a large batch and shaken for individual glasses. All versions are great, as long as you avoid the bright green commercial margarita mixes. A perfect margarita requires fresh lime juice.

Why a Prosecco Margarita Cocktail?

Bubbles make this Prosecco Margarita even more refreshing and festive. I love the effervescence of this sparkly drink, while it still tastes like a margarita. It's livelier and lighter than a classic Margarita.

Prosecco vs Champagne, What's the difference?

Although Champagne and Prosecco are both sparkling white wines, they are made using different processes and with different grapes. Champagne is from France, and Prosecco is from Italy. While Champagne is made with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes, Prosecco is made with Prosecco, (or Glera) grapes. The method of production to make Champagne is more costly than production methods for Prosecco. This is partly why it is more expensive. You can use Champagne or any sparkling wine for this bubbly cocktail, but I love the fruity dryness of Prosecco.

The right Tequila for Margaritas

The Margarita is all about the tequila, so be sure to use a quality Blanco tequila made from 100% blue agave. Be aware, that although tequila is naturally gluten-free, there are many cheaper brands that do contain gluten.

Have these amazing Prosecco Sparkling Margaritas for happy hour with Coconut Shrimp Tacos, or Stuffed Anaheim Peppers  And try using tequila another in another Cinco de Mayo cocktail: a Mexican Mule Or even put it in your dinner with this delicious Tequila Chicken Chili

Ingredients

  • coarse salt for rimming glasses
  • 1.5 oz Blanco Tequila chilled
  • 2 oz lime juice freshly squeezed
  • ½ oz Triple Sec
  • 4 oz Prosecco chilled
  • ½ teaspoon agave syrup
  • lime slices for serving

Instructions

  • squeeze limes for juice, and set aside
  • cover a small plate with the coarse salt
  • moisten the rim of a glass with squeezed lime, turn upside down on the salt-covered plate and turn until the rim of the glass is coated in salt
  • In an ice filled cocktail shaker, put the tequila, lime juice, and Triple Sec. Shake vigorously until the shaker is cold.
  • Pour into prepared glass, and top up with chilled Prosecco
  • Garnish with lime slices and serve.

Notes

Agave syrup is easy to find, but not commonly stocked in most kitchens. You can substitute a ½ teaspoon of sugar, honey or any other sweetener. You can also try this drink with no added sweetener, in the classic way.
