A mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail made by muddling fresh mint and lime, then topping it up with ice, rum and club soda or seltzer water. For this mango version, we are adding mango nectar. Like mint, limes, and rum, mangoes are also native to Cuba. So this delicious mango mojito just makes sense!
Since mango is a favorite fruit for many, me included (check out my Mango Coconut Ice Cream , or try Turkey Tacos with Mango Salsa), it just needs to be in a cocktail.
Why You'll Love This Cocktail
- This refreshing cocktail is the perfect drink to cool down with on a hot day.
- You make this mango cocktail right in the serving glass, no need for a cocktail shaker.
- You can easily make a pitcher of this delicious cocktail to serve a larger group. (See how under "Helpful Tips" below, and in the recipe card).
- Did you know that bartenders don't like making mojitos? See Drinks You Should Never Order at a Bar. Make them at home and never annoy another bartender!
Ingredient Notes
- Mint Use fresh mint leaves. There are several varieties of mint. The variety most commonly found in grocery stores is spearmint. But if you have a different variety in your garden, use that. Just be sure the leaves are fresh, bright green and not wilted.
- Lime Juice Fresh lime juice is essential. You will need the juice of half a lime for each drink, plus more for garnish. The classic drink is always made with lime juice, not lemon juice.
- Mango Nectar Mango Nectar is already sweetened. You can use mango juice, but you may want to add sugar to the drink.
- White Rum Mojito cocktails are always made with white rum, also called light rum or silver rum. Don't use amber or dark rum, or spiced rum. The more subtle flavor of white rum allows the mango flavor and the fresh mint and lime to shine.
- Club Soda Club soda is commonly used to add effervescence to cocktails, but you can use seltzer water, or soda water, too.
Here's How to Make It
- Put mint leaves in the bottom of the glass
- Add lime juice and muddle gently, just enough to bruise the leaves.
- Fill the glass with ice cubes.
- Add mango nectar and rum. Top up with club soda.
- Stir, garnish with mint and lime wedges, enjoy!
Helpful Tips
- If you have ripe mangos and prefer to use fresh mango, make a mango puree using a food processor or blender. Use the mango puree instead of the mango nectar. (This works with frozen mango too).
- If you are using fresh mango, garnish with mango chunks.
- A traditional mojito usually includes sugar in the ingredients. For this mango mojito, the sweet mango nectar makes it unnecessary to add sugar. However, if you use fresh mango, frozen mango, or mango juice, the drink may not be sweet enough for you. Sugar is added in the muddling stage, usually a couple of teaspoons. There is no need to make a simple syrup. Don't use brown sugar because the molasses flavor will change the mojito.
- You can also use honey or agave syrup to add extra sweetness.
- You can make a pitcher of mango mojitos. Use the "Servings" button at the top of the recipe card to change to the number of drinks that you want to make. This will give you the quantity of ingredients to use. You can make the whole recipe in a pitcher. If you aren't serving right away, save the club soda step until you are.
Common Questions
No, a muddler is handy to have, but you can muddle using the handle of a wooden spoon.
Yes you can simply omit the rum and you'll have a refreshing mojito mocktail or virgin mojito.
Serving Suggestions
This fun cocktail is a perfect drink to enjoy with all the summer grilling and salads. It's especially good with spicy foods like Jerk Chicken Salad or Grilled Jerk Chicken Drumsticks. It's a perfect cocktail with seafood, too. We love serving it with Grilled Shrimp Salad, or Lemon Garlic Shrimp. As for appetizers you will love sipping this refreshing drink with Grilled Sesame Shishito Peppers.
